Winter hardy to USDA Zones 3-6. This shrub typically grows between 6-10 feet wide and  6-10 feet tall. However, it is possible to reach 20 feet in five years. In very rich and optimal soil, it can even reach 25 feet. This shrub can be trimmed to about 4 feet 2 inches from the ground to maintain a desirable ornamental shape. It is suitable for most soil conditions, from dry to wet. It is often used where water likes to stand and collect or where there is ice build up in the winter. However, it does not like to be planted in extremely hot and humid climates. It prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Thrives in moist soils, including intermittently flooded ones, but tolerates somewhat drier soils better than some other types of willows. 
If you want this shrub to do well in droughts you need to water it. 
In the first year the leaves will be a purple color, but after that it will turn to a gray-green color.
